Different kinds of taps for you

You should never underestimate the importance of the simple screw and the nut. One malfunctioning screw can bring an airplane down to the earth in a matter of seconds. Therefore, it becomes imperative that you use the perfect screws and nuts in your machinery as well as your household equipment. The screw may look like a simple nondescript instrument. However, in combination with the nut, the screw would be a powerful tool. Have you ever wondered where did the screws and nuts get the threads? The industries use special tools such as taps and dies for the purpose.

Just as a screw has the threading on the outside, the nuts would have the same on the insides. Naturally, there have to be two different implements for the same. You use the tap for the internal threading on implements such as the nuts and certain pipes as well. The screws would require external threading. The dies would do the job for you.

The taps and dies have other functions as well. You can use them to repair the threads as well. This is a process known as chasing. The taps and dies you use for this purpose are a little different from the ones you use for carving out the threads.

The thread taps come in different sizes depending on the kind of threading you wish to make. In case you have to thread on softer metals like aluminum, you use the High-Speed Steel (HSS taps and dies). At the same time, you can use the thread dies made of cobalt on materials like stainless steel.

Contrary to what you think, the threading is a simple process. The manufacturers use a method known as thread rolling for creating external threads on the bolts, screws, certain pipes, and taps as well. We refer to the taps we use in the bathrooms etc, and not to the thread taps. This process involves squeezing a piece of an unthreaded bolt between a pair of opposite dies. As you roll the same, the cutting action of the dies ensures the formation of threads by displacing the metal on the blank. You can use machines as well to do the job for you. Naturally, the job would be of a better quality and would have a better variation in the tolerance.

Whenever you produce threads using taps and dies, you refer to them as cut threads. These cut threads are of the highest quality. You can find the hand taps to be of three main types. One would be the taper taps followed by the plug taps and the bottoming taps. Each tap has its own importance.

The taper taps are the easiest to use as they have flatter bodies at the tip as compared to the main part of the tap. This enables the taper tap to move smoothly at the initial stages. The plug taps would be similar to the taper taps. However, they have more threads. Therefore, the threading activity commences earlier. The bottoming taps do not have any ground threads. Hence, you have to use them in conjunction with the taper taps and plug taps.
